 This year fucking sucks ass.

Due to a racist ass fascist fucking moron leading our nation and being irresponsible in the face of a global pandemic we are now in a situation where people are sick, out of work, blindly hoping a rushed vaccine does the job, and in a scenario where the mental state of the collective couldn't be at any more of a low.

There's a culture war of people wanting people to give a shit about people vs people who don't give no fucks and think the mass genocidal idea of herd immunity is how we get through a virus that could have been prevented if the leadership in question cared more about actually being an adequate leader rather than a racist narcissist's who only care's about whatever numbers the less than 1 percenters are pulling off of the slave labor of a society of people who really want the freedom to live their life and be comfortable where they are but instead we've had it drilled into us that we need to ride or die and live that grind to get that bread but really you never will get that bread because you'll be dead or destroyed before you even get to mix the flour and water together to form a dough for fuck fucking sake.

I tried to bring this back out of sheer frustration towards my associates inability to listen to or form decently constructed opinions on anything due to either sheer ignorance or the inability to deal with criticism it's fucking infuriatingly annoying to not be able to express your own thoughts and opinions without everyone around you being a giant fucking pussy about you not being one hundred percent in agreement with everything they also like, and yes while the opposite is also annoying I'm tired of this both sides narrative that we seemingly have to keep doing because yeah some people are bad but at the very least they aren't justifying terrible things to happen.

Yes that statement is political I have my own collective set of beliefs and opinions that are the foundation of what I consider right or wrong in this world and those things lead me to try and change and fix systems to prevent them from happening like voting against a cock sucking mother fucker that wants to call nazis marching down the streets yelling "Jews will not replace us" very fine people or who thinks that it's fine to send the military to attack people protesting a broken criminal justice system that let's racist get away scot free for killing people of color at a higher rate than their Caucasian counterparts I'm just saying people that's fucked up and you honestly can't expect people to idly sit by and let that shit happen to them Martin thought that was a good idea and he got shot so fuck it those monuments to capitalism can eat shit and fuck off when people are dying the thing we shouldn't be concerned with is buildings but rather then establishment that's letting those brick shit houses be more important than the society that built them.

This is why it's hard to want to just sit by and be like, "hey everyone I know the world around you is burning but hey this new song is SUUUUUPER CATCHY ignore the fascist regime around you and instead placate yourself with this catchy ass jam yo," just doesn't really seem like something that we all need because I get the feeling living in some weird idealized world of hey everything is fine meme isn't what we all need to do.

No we all gotta realize that shit's not very good and we have a host of improvements that need to be made in order to really get there as a society and yes music, movies, games, and what have you are our mental escape from what's a draining point in our cultural zeitgeist I really do truly feel that and I really REALLY just have wanted to say since before covid happened that this is the best song of the year...

The irony not withstanding this year didn't honestly get any better but that song for me was kind of an amalgamation of anticipation I had because I saw those guy's play that song at their fist show around 4 years ago and when they finally released it I was legit hyped and happy and while there's other songs that triggered a sense of joy and elation for me this year they where predominantly older tracks that I was very much late to the party in getting to finally listening to and everything going on with the whole concert industry basically going under and around 90% of  music venues getting ready to belly up and go away make this influx of awesome that was forming seem like a fever dream of sorts.

People are trying one Ben Wendt of The Way Way Back has a pretty bitching podcast called Ope! radio where he does his best every week to inform everyone about the fantastic Kansas City collective of musicians making great stuff in the wake of the corporatized killing of 96.5 The Buzz which if I'm a be real was a death that didn't hit so hard considering I was honestly feeling a detachment from the station over the past year or 2 due to the realization that I'm not the audience they want and I kind of in some regards am regressing in taste because the new crop of shenanigans they wanna push out isn't my cup of tea.

This longwinded series of words vomited on this screen are one last throwback to the format that birthed this site a collective of random thoughts and emotions I feel in regards to the world around me, I don't honestly feel 2021 is gonna have any more #SamSOTD because if I'm going to be real in 10 years I think I've just become my joked title of being a professional nobody to which I mean that I've accomplished a few cool fringe things for myself but not actually gotten any more ahead in regards to my prospective writing aspirations than when I was fresh out of high school and suffering terrible anxiety ridden bouts of depression that I tried to hide through telling people these things are cool and while depressive episodes come in waves I think the only thing 10 years of this brought is the realization that this antiquated format isn't what people wanna do anymore instead they need a more interactive and vocal method that's attached to social media and I don't think I can do that by myself so I guess as it stands the attempted comeback was real and I wanted to try but fucking a was this not ment to be.

So as I sign off I guess I'll go out with one thing that most truly rang true and it was this line,

This year I'm pretty sure I lost a close associate of mine due to my rant post George Floyd protest in regards to Mr. Donald J. Trumps declaration of sending the national guard to try and silence the protest to which I said then and I stand by now if you support that man FUCK YOU! That was close to 15 years and associate and being declaired the god father of his children and a potential best man to his second marriage all thrown away with one unfriending on Facebook to which I'm best off quoting my own mother in saying, "good riddance." 

2020 is the end of a lot of things and a time frame we all need to begin to really change things aren't ever going to be the same and to try and keep em that way is stupid and selfish grow up, move on, and improve things to come for those in the future because when you've passed on there's no afterlife just and end of one so be something worth a fuck now.

Twas fuck while it lasted but all things need to come to an end so thank you and have a wonderful day please for all that is good and progressive stop supporting terrible ideas and start telling people to fuck off.

A Decade Under the Influence: 10 years of SOTD

I started this shit 10 fucking years ago today that's crazy as hell folks in 10 years I....wrote a bunch of post, tried a host of different post types, threw myself 3 shows, and kind of don't really feel like I did the most I could have done with this little pet project but at the same time I kind of did more than I could have imagined a shitty thread nobody read 10 years ago could go so thanks for sticking through this project as a whole ain't gonna be a blog forever but I guess I've engraved the concept into my very being so whenever passion comes back to start something with a group of like minded individuals really pushing me I'll have a decades worth of shenanigans to be proud of but even with all my failures in this venture I can at the very least say that it lasted longer than anyone ever could have guessed.

I don't have it bad anymore but I can't come up with much else more appropriate to say...

Posting Regularly on Facebook

Yo people I'm aware that I rarely have much to really post on here but I do make an effort to keep the Official Facebook Page updated fairly often so you guy's should click this article to go there and keep up on some of the various things coming out that have me hyped and of course like the page while you're at it....

You know what grinds my gears?!?!?!

Yes you read that right I'm a steal this bitch right from Family Guy because there's a topic that's been on my mind for a minute and I wanna bitch about it so bear with me because I'm a hella go on a bit of a vulgarity laden romp through my opinion people and the topic that's got my gears grinding today.....Covers.

Ok now I'm not saying that I dislike the idea of one artist covering another artist music at all in fact I've covered that topic plenty of times on here just look back at the old two-fer Tuesday post and you'll see plenty of covers that I found to be very interesting and in many cases pretty fucking good but too often these day's I'm running into many of the uninformed masses of individuals that seems to constantly parade this idea that some cover version of a tune is better then the originals in one to many cases and that shit really annoys the fuck outta me.

My problem with that is simple...people are wrong there's a very VERY small list of songs that I could fully consider to be superior to the originals and after that about 98 1/4% of every other cover isn't as good and it's simple really because there's no reason that you should say person A isn't as good as person B's because if person A didn't kick so much ass then why would person B cover them and also in most cases covering a song is only really done to boost any particular audiences attention to any act because you're showcasing your talents with a tune they don't have to really put a whole lot of thought into and it's a quick dollar.

So in conclusion if you think that Metallica did any song better then anyone else, you think Shinedown's rendition of simple man is good, or you feel like telling me that any cover you heard on the internet by some schlub who couldn't get the views on the merits of their own music deserves to not be allowed to leave the house without an accompanying helmet because you're wrong and the fact that you think you're right really grinds my gears....

HAPPY 5 YEARS SONG OF THE DAY!!!!!!!!!!

So February 8^th 2010 I posted on the Smashing Pumpkins Forums my first ever song of the day and oddly enough it was about the song Loves In A Dangerous time the Barenaked Ladies version which in all honesty is an odd thought to really think about because I started it out with a band that wasn’t The Smashing Pumpkins and on top of that it was a cover which is a thing that I’ve actually written quite a bit about on here even so far as to dedicating multiple Tuesdays to which is actually kind of funny when you think about it.

Here I am at the 5 year mark I’ve been spending some time of my day to just bullshit together about some random ass song that I have no clue if anyone actually ever takes the time to really listen to and in all honesty I’ve become increasingly terrible about consistently posting with absolutely no signs of really improving that and in all honesty if it weren’t for random bits of people just mentioning it or giving me small thumbs up I’d honestly of just given things up a long time ago and no this post isn’t going to become a cynical little rant about my disposition in life but in all honesty it’s also not going to be making any promises of significant growth to come Nah I just want to say that even though I’m a very cynical bastard and I have worlds of improvement to really get to there’s at least 5 things I’d like to make note of for you people.

1. Those who comment, share, or in general give me promotion and feedback of my work are the best kind of people and in all honesty I truly need you guy’s to continue to give me that motivation and promotion to really spread the message because…

2. I’m only one guy in fact I’m a fairly normal guy that just has a place to make for myself and this is just one of my favorite outlets.

3. I love covers…it’s an odd fascination really and while I will 95% of the time say the original to be better it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy giving them a listen.

4.I have no shame for any tune I’ve ever covered on here even all the shitty country music and alternative music will always be my bread and butter.

5. The Smashing Pumpkins are my band people and while I’ve been pretty lacking in giving adequate feedback to one William Patrick Corgans most recent contributions I will say that they are still the most important band that ever came into my life and all the haters can suck my balls.

NOW with all that in mind here’s to another 5 years people also here’ Set the Ray to Jerry the greatest mother fucking song of all time…

Hey guy's I'm currently in the midst of dealing with an unnecessary amount of dumb shit so it might be a while before I can get to some legitimate postings on here so sorry if I don't update for a while....

So in about 2 1/2 minutes this band managed to not only prove they're something more then a series of juvenile songs but also managed to encompass every 20 something individuals thoughts of life in one simple phrase, "Nobody likes you when you're 23," and with that like my sister told me....FUCK EM!

Dr Worm-They Might Be Giants





So from what I can remember watching Nickelodeon when I was a kid they played this music video and now being a grown up and having responsibilities and what not there's only one thing I can say about this song....It's still one of the BEST GOD DAMN SONGS OF ALL TIME!!!!!

I love this tune and it's simplistic tale of a worm looking to make a name for himself and with that in mind Dr. Worm you're my hero and I think you are in fact getting better on the drums so roll me out buddy because it's my birthday and I'll do what I want!!!!

So…it’s been two years since that statement was made and I had my 500^th post spectacular people and now I’m on post number 1,000 and there are two things that came to mind 1. I’m surprised I let my laziness make it take 2 years to post 500 more times on this blog and 2. HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

I know that was rather inappropriate but you know life’s not really that appropriate when you think about it and just like two years ago I kind of had this odd realization of reaching a fairly large numerical milestone rather suddenly and it’s honestly rather crazy to think of because that’s well over 1000 songs, bands, and topics and since those initial post I’ve gone from just doing song’s of the day’s 7 days a week to expanding to concert, album, and music video reviews along with a myriad of best of list, holiday specials, and even reached the point where I have a weekly schedule of articles which is freaking crazy to think about people.

So here I sit trying to come up with an article proper to kind of capture the craziness of it all and in all honesty I kind of don’t really think there’s much that can be done that hasn’t already been covered on here and I don’t see much a reason to post a Throwback Thursday so I guess I can just thank all of you guy’s for reading and post the song that’s gotten the most views out of any article I’ve posted on this little blog of mine which oddly enough is from February of last year and was the only post I can recall doing in the wee hours of the night after just kind of stumbling upon Fitz and the Tantrums release of the official audio clip for their tune Out of My League where I kind of most literally posted my initial impressions and am amazed that it managed to get read so many times and on a slightly lesser note actually brought this band out of one hit wonderdom which is pretty fucking spectacular…

Also on a lesser note they’ve decided most recently to release my favorite track from that album as their newest radio single in the form of Fools Gold which I’m just going to take credit for now even though I’ve never brought that up at any point in this blog.

The importance of being important...

So today's been rather difficult to come up with something to actually write about so I decided to go for a walk on some rather unkempt trails and in the process of driving up there and going for a very quiet walk I was thinking to myself about this CD I'd gotten back from a friend of mine that we'd put together god knows how long ago that we called our split 7 even though it's actually 20 songs long, but that's kind of irrelevant because while walking this thought came to mind that kind of inspired the title of this post which is why it's something as stupid as a mix of songs thrown together by two teenagers is something significant.

I was talking to the buddy that I'd made this very odd blend of shitty post grunge, hard rock, and alternative jam's of a CD not too long ago and he's going through some less then pleasant times at this time and in the process of giving him someone to talk to about these times this CD got brought up and I found myself going on this odd tangent because he tried to suggest that we somehow re-burn 2 new copies of this CD so we don't have to continue loaning it out to the other to hold onto for years at a time before eventually remembering to hand it to the other one because it's their turn and the reason I was telling him why we shouldn't do that is because there's this special thing about that CD and that it has to go on until it can't be played anymore and we can't have it any other way no matter how stupid it sounds.

It's this wild little tangent that kind of brings forth this idea that he mentioned where we all are aware that songs can take us to a time and a place in our lives that's a fairly common thing to accept that's why I write the throwback Thursday articles really, but there's something just oddly important about this in that when I'm skipping around trying to comprehend just what was going through my head in why I picked some truly shitty tunes I'm reminded of just how fucking fun it was to come up with this CD and what inspired a decent amount of the song choices and it's that overwhelming sense of nostalgia that makes it feel kind of important which makes me wonder why is that so important?

I can only really kick around an idea so much before I guess that this as cheesy as it sounds has become something more then a fairly amusing bunching of amusingly bad and great tunes from a time when making a mix CD was actually a thing as much as it is one of the remaining tokens of this odd little friendship between two individuals that have moved on to do things in our lives that lead us to really be kind of taken back by just how far apart we've had to grow to grow up and i guess we may have our times when we're annoyed by each other but this CD is just another example of two people that can be scratched up, overplayed, outdated, and likely to skip around but we're still rocking those teenage blues and these tunes are still as awesome as the two of us.

Man looking back can be so much fun but I guess if we do have to make a new split it'd be funny to see if we still like our choices as much almost 10 years later as we did at the time we where picking these tracks...also hopefully less shitty post grunge would be awesome, but even after all these years I'm still going to have to say while I won't post the tracks on the CD this one is still as awesome now as it was the first time Pigmy got me to get my groove on to it while we'd spend hours illegally downloading songs and talking about girls...

HAPPY 4 YEARS SOTD!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY FAK BATMAN...Tomorrow people I've officially been writing song of the day for 4 years and if it weren't for a variety of things keeping me in a rather off mindset kind of like the way I was starting kind of in a sea of not knowing what the fuck I need to do next (just this time I can go buy myself a drink) I decided I'd give myself a daily goal to just write about a different song every single day on the Smashing Pumpkins Forums and in a few months eventually became this wonderful little website of mine and in all honesty as cheesy and overly dramatic as it sounds this honestly is one of the best things I think I've ever done because while there's plenty of poorly written post on here there's little things in life that can really bring some feeling of joy quite like the random encounters I've had where people have noticed and appreciated my songs of the day and to all my loyal readers keep on kicking ass.

SO rather then letting this cheesfest of thanks go on any further I figure nothing better then cranking up the angst ridden alternative music and singing along with my favorite little bit of misery in the form of this Jawbreaker classic because I'm pretty sure they said it best....

Happy Birthday SOTD!

Hey you want to know what’s awesome everybody? The fact that today marks the 3 year anniversary of Sam’s Song of the Day.

*cue all the celebratory party shenanigans*

Aaaand with that fun little realization I figured this year’s overly spectacularly well thought out post would be….umm….I actually have no idea what I was going to do to celebrate that this year to be really honest with you people, because well I’ve been lazy as hell as of late on this fine little outlet of imagination which is quite annoying really but there’s a bit of a silver lining in this.

Today’s Friday and I’ve been writing these for 3 years and admittedly it’s hard to keep consistent after so long because well life just doesn’t always let us focus on that task and I’ve noticed that this week’s song selections while limited are good examples of doing what I love best which is to listen to the tunes that make me happy or give me something to relate to which is quite annoying to think of how I seem to not really have the ability to just sit back and absorb the good tunes like I use to but even so let’s crank these jams up and celebrate the fact that I’ve spent the last 3 years of my life giving you guy’s a song to listen to.

So with that I figured what tune other then the big band styles of Fitz and the Tantrums and their take on those gold digging wenches of life…

Happy 2 Year's SOTD

You know what I realized a few weeks ago? I’ve been writing Song of the Day for 2 years, yeah on February 8, 2010 I wrote my very first Song of the Day on the Smashing Pumpkins forums and it’s been one hell of a ride since then.

Now there wasn’t too much thought process behind doing it other then the attempts to make a thread on there that I could consistently keep updated unlike the other board members at that time and I did to very little feedback in fact most of the members I’m sure mocked me but you know I decided to say fuck it and kept pressing through and eventually after some time I started to thoroughly feel that my abilities as a writer were greatly improving and with the suggestion of a good friend I decided to expand and launch this blog that I’ve been maintaining for just over a year now. It was one hell of a trip keeping posted on the forums, this blog, and my personal Facebook account but I did until of course when I reached the year long anniversary where I made the sad announcement to quit the thread on the Forums and devote myself full time to this website.

Now let’s cut this sad talk because this is a cause of celebration people I’ve been doing this shit for 2 years and I don’t plan on stopping any day soon so let’s get to discussing the things I’ve noticed after doing this for so long.

Fun facts for all fun facts in deed ever since I’ve been doing this I felt it’d be a good idea to keep a list of all the songs I’ve written about and a little log of the number of times I’ve mentioned any particular artist and since I love countdowns I think I’m going to tell you guy’s the top 5 most represented acts and my impressions upon realizing the numbers.

5. Placebo 7 Song’s of the Day



If you know me personally you know I’ve been quite the fan of this little British Trio for quite some time and the fact that they’ve clocked in so many Songs of the day shouldn’t be any surprise.

There’s not much to really say while I do have a tendency to listen to them in certain mindsets and such they’ve honestly made some of the most criminally overlooked tunes with the posted video being an example of such. With a variety of sounds from the dirties of rift rockers to these kind of out there electronic tinged danceable cuts they’ve made songs for every possible interest I’ve had over these two years and time and time again I’ve found myself coming back and reminding myself just why I hold them in high esteem by wanting to bring up a song that truly does speak to me and with many more on the way I’m pretty sure these guys will rope me back in soon enough.

4. Foo Fighters 8 Entries



That cut right there should be more then enough a reason to bring up just why I’ve written about these guys so much so quickly. Wasting Light is one hell of an album and upon listening to this song and then the album I found myself having a new found respect and admiration for a band that I always felt made good songs but hadn’t yet clicked with me.

It is surprising yes to realize that I wrote about 8 different songs but hey I don’t see no problem in that especially when you get to the next two acts like…

3. Neon Trees 9 Entries



This last year has had a lot to do with these numbers I will admit but looking at this I pretty much wrote the equivalent of their whole first album god damn people.

Ok all joking aside I really can’t lie this little power pop group really has made some quality numbers like the one I posted above, and really the fact that the album in question was just filled to the brim with equally worthwhile cuts I really couldn’t help but write about these guys in a pinch. Big chorus’ simple rifts, and a variety of styles really gives these guys a chameleon like quality that managed to give them a tune to describe every possible thing I was going through and time and time again I just had to tell you guys how bad ass one of their songs has been and again their nowhere near ready to quit this so let’s hope the rest of the world gives these guys a shot.

2. Cee-Lo, “Mo Fakun Lady Killa Green,” 17 Entries



I’m aware that it shouldn’t be a surprise that he’s number 2 but HOLY DAMN people 17 cuts from this smoother then smooth boss hoss of a performer and its’ all because of the epic work that is The Lady Killer.

Yes I love that album and pretty much all of the tunes that followed. I was taken at Fuck You and I stayed because he really was someone that just delivered time and time again and the fact that he felt to let the internet be home to some lesser known cuts lead me to not only have to listen to him but write about him pretty much every month for a year straight and if he continues this way he MIGHT just dethrone the champions of champions which if you couldn’t of guessed it by this point well then you just might not know me that well.

1. The Smashing Pumpkins 24 Entries



Ok now in a show of hands who honestly did not expect this to be the case really let me count.

Ok if not only being started on their fan site wasn’t enough these guy’s are my favorite band of all time period the end no questions asked and it’s been that way for as long as I’ve loved this crazy little thing called music people and in the two years I’ve written these songs of the day they’ve been working on that massive behemoth of a project that is Teargarden By Kaleidoscope and of course with each new cut I felt some contractual obligation to discuss and of course with the massive flooding of bands that have interested me over these two years the only constant is that I’ll always have a moment where I fall back on one of their cuts and be reminded just why I love them.

There’s very few outlets where we all feel our voice’s to be spoken and for me this band has made everything I possibly could and will forever want through the rifts and lyrics of one William Patrick Corgan and if my undying gratitude of fandom isn’t enough of a reason to have written about them so much then I’ll never know what is and because of that the most covered artist amongst my collection of tunes has been The Smashing Pumpkins.

It’s crazy really to think of just how many possible things I’ve covered over the past two years and the shifts in interest and genres covered are quite astounding and while I couldn’t really bring myself to figuring out the statistics of genres covered and such there’s one last things that I feel needs to be brought up like….



The first song I ever wrote about for Song of the Day was a cover of the song, “Lovers in A Dangerous Time,” by the Barenaked Ladies, and the reason I bring that up is because looking at my top list you’ll notice there’s a lot of respected alternative acts that in some way are me exercising my credibility muscle but of course the first thing I feel to write about is a band that I’ll occasionally feel a bit embarrassed to say I like because of the fact that their decidedly pop in many ways.

But at the time I started this I was finishing High school and there wasn’t a whole lot going on in my life, I had reached the end of my teenage years and it was time to start being an adult but for whatever reason the only thing I wanted to do was my Choir Class at the time. Yes I know that’s a bit odd to say but it was my last real thing to do and at the time of course like many a person there was a girl I was interested in, but of course in details I’m not willing to talk about opportunities where lost and all I was left with was the desire to sing a song that actually required some talent and that’s where this song came in.

There’s really something magical about this song and it’s messages of love being possible in even the harshest of conditions and of course the fact that this is the most prime example of just how vocally talented this group was just lead me to have this song on endless repeat….that and I think I was just getting hooked on the phenomenon that is Glee but we’ll ignore that whole part for the more credible but cheestatic sounding story now where was I?

Oh yeah this song’s always been a personal favorite of mine and because the band in question kind of shaped my interest to listen to a little bit of everything I felt that starting out with something a bit out there but accessible would lead me to feel comfortable to cover a wide range of tunes and I’m glad to say that has proven correct so why don’t we wrap this bad boy up by raising a toast to Sam’s Song of the Day here’s to more songs to come.

You know I’ve been seeing a lot of Best of 2011 list floating around the internet and TV and I figured since I enjoy top 5’s and it’s just that time of year to do so I’d compose my picks for the best cuts of the year, but before I get into anything I’m going to point out that while I enjoy just being all about me, myself, and I on this faithful little blog I’m going to have to point out a few tunes that while aren’t the most quality tunes that really do deserve to be noted for just how freaking big they were this year like…


5. Super Bass-Nicki Minaj



This year was chocked full of high energy pop infused electronic mess’ all over radio and for the better part of this year I was forced to listen to quite a bit of top 40 and of all the guilty pleasures I endured this one was honestly the biggest surprise. Now I’ve always been aware of Nicki Minaj and her various assets, but the music she does at best was a very well done series of Rap Verses and easily avoidable songs but one day I’m trolling the Youtube’s and I see this odd little square box for this Video on the main page for this song with a very pink Nicki and decided to give it the old college heave ho and give this song a listen.

I’m not going to lie to you at first I was a good bit unprepared for the 808 heavy blast of sugary sweet pop coated catchiness that I was about to listen to and for whatever reason the only thing that came to mind was that white people would love this….Don’t judge me.

Needless to say I was more then correct because not too soon after a Taylor Swift endorsement this song blew the fuck up and the next thing I know I’m hearing it EVERYWEHRE and while I will note that Party Rock Anthem was the bigger tune this one I feel I would rather note as being worthwhile in the realms of pop tunes I have to note as being worthwhile to losing some credibility over.

Ok I’m going to make note that Pop radio always tries to get atleast one alternative act into their rotation of tunes in order to 1. Give people a break from the auto tuned mess and 2. Give some sense of credibility but every year something odd seems to creep in and oh was this year’s underdog a dozy.



4. Pumped Up Kicks-Foster and the People



Now if threre was one surprisingly HUGE hit that occurred this year it’d be this song by a landslide because I honestly didn’t even remotely expect this spaced out little jam about someone losing their shit and going on a killing spree to even remotely crack top 40 but for whatever reason by the grace of god these guys have become the breakout act of 2011.

You know even after the massive amount of radio play this song has been subjugated to it still has this kind of refreshingly strung out sound to it that’s still as warm and tripped out as the first time I heard it and thought Pumped was some radio edit. The sheer hypnotic nature of this little indie rock gem seemed to really creep into radio and just took over person after person and while I will admit that Mumford and Sons folk rock styling’s where the kick in the balls modern radio needed this song just more seems like a radio staple that’s less pretentious more accessible and think for that it really is one of the best tunes and my personal pick for brake out song of 2011.

Now as great as this song is your reading Sam’s Song Of the Day people and if you’ve been reading every day you know that there’s one particular artist that’s probably dominated more post then anyone else this year.



3. Cry Baby-Cee-Lo Green



AHHHHH yeah people it’s time to yet again write about the all mighty lady killer himself Cee-Lo, “MO Fakun Lady Killa,” Green and I’m guessing this choice is at best a bit confusing but let me explain myself here.

Ok now I’m going to have to say people that while, “Fuck You,” was not only a monumentally amazing number and the most gratifyingly successful number of the year I personally feel that while the song as a whole lacks what really is the finer points of the Lady Killer album which is the showcasing of how Cee-Lo is really the modern day sultan of soul, the man with the master plan to make all them panties drop, the undeniably most well crafted performer out there when it comes to taking that retro-grooved sound and making it sound like an instant classic and of all the songs off the masterpiece that is The Lady Killer I feel that this is the best released single in terms of giving the listener an idea of what’s to come on that album.

Although now that I’m sitting here listening to it for the sake of really being able to review it I’ve come to realize that over its sincerely soulful vocal performance and it’s slower pace it’s really one of the classiest get the hell over yourself tunes I’ve ever heard and in it’s smoother then smooth sound it’s hiding this mildly egocentric tale of how her broke the ex-lovers heart to a point where she’s now made him the bad guy in this situation which is both classy and awesome, but even an amusingly off beat video staring the all mighty Urkle couldn’t catapult this song to the heights of the next two tunes which to say the least was a decision I really had to think hard about.



2. Rolling in the Deep-Adele



Honestly amongst the heap of tunes that felt the desire to come out this year this one slowly but surely managed to chug it’s ever so powerfully soulful sound onto radio and just carved out a path of destruction that almost no one could match.

This song was a slow burner in a lot of ways because the first time I heard it I didn’t really quite understand what I was about to be completely overtaken by but this song grew and grew and then out of nowhere it just suddenly became this behemoth of a hit that everyone just couldn’t escape and didn’t really want to for that matter. This song is even now after so many rotations still this overwhelmingly huge sounding blast of misery that only someone who is both pissed off and vocally gifted could do because this song just starts off ever so simply with a bare boned guitar and Adele’s voice in a hollow room before then erupting in this huge almost tribal sound that she then belts out these god given bits of rage and power that just grab you from the heart strings and make you want to yell fuck you to that person that broke your heart this year.

Really this song is just one of many cuts on an album that really deserves all the credit as being the best of the year and as great as this song and it’s corresponding album are I just can’t call it number one even though every single best off 2011 list out there from Rolling Stone to VH1 would like to tell me there was just one song this year that blew my mind in ways I really couldn’t of ever figured it would and that would be….


1. Rope-Foo Fighters



Now if there was one song this year that I can say that not only made an impact on me that was both instantaneous and lasting it was this and not only did this song blow my damn mind but it finally made me realize just why these guys are constantly considered to be the best, yes ladies and gentlemen I have finally found the way of the foo.

As powerful as Adele’s voice is nothing beats the rush of power an electric guitar can bring and not only did they bring the rock they made my choice for the greatest song of 2011.

To be honesty I’ve always been on the fence about this band because as much as I dislike Dave Grohl as a person I’ve always felt that this band really just makes very catchy records that all grow old as soon as the radio decides to rotate them every five minutes but this song was different. From the first time I really heard the echoing intro I wasn’t sure what to expect but then out of nowhere I suddenly got blasted with this furiously steady stream of ever so heavy guitars before then being greeted with the familiar sound of Dave Grohl giving a very melodic verse before then erupting in a series of bouncing yelps before then singing this ever so larger then life Chorus that instantaneously made me have to go listen to this song another 150 times and buy the album.

No shit people this song alone made walk out and buy a copy of what was to be a surprisingly amazing album and even now after so many rotations just like the first time I ever heard this song I still can’t control my desire to jump up and scream this song as I feverously air guitar the fuck out of this very garage-rock influenced rocker that brought just the right amount of ass kicking rockers Alternative rock radio needed amongst the haze of electro-indie dominance and for that I have to give it credit as being my choice as the best song of 2011.

Well there you go people those are my picks for the 5 best songs of 2011 it really has been a bad ass year for music which is both a surprise and a pleasant change I can’t wait to go through yet another years batch of songs of the day hopefully covering some bad ass tunes before this predicted end of the world.
