Sam's Top 20 of 2014: #4

4. Fitz and the Tantrums-Fools Gold

OK in all honesty this song shouldn’t be on this list considering this album came out last year and they made the list with More than just a dream but like the Arctic Monkeys earlier this list an amazingly bad ass tune that made a decent radio impact this year deserves note and when it’s my favorite song on what was one of last year’s best releases you bet your fucking ass that I’m going to put it on this year’s best of list.

The ultimate amalgamation of the classiest act in alternative music it’s like the greatest most epic lost soul track of yesteryear with its larger than life production, its soaring chorus, and instrumentation that sounds like they threw everything in it to make it the largest most epic sounding fucking song you’ve ever heard you have the most confident performance from Fitz and Noel on top of that and it makes the best god damn song this bands done since Money Grabber and dare I say it is actually BETTER!

Yeah I said that and I’ll stick to my guns until they top it but until then I’m a go every embarrassingly sing along people because this shits just TOO GOOD!!!!

5. Meg Myers-Head Heart Head

OK so this song’s really tough to put on here because it really made no impact on radio this year and it’s video came out early-ish 2013 but even with all that aside the song that broke Meg Myers this year Desire I just couldn’t put on this list because while it introduced me to the hardest musical crush I’ve had since the first time I heard Kimbra and it has some rather interesting stories for me it wasn’t the best offering her killer Make A Shadow EP had no there was probably two tunes that were and are about a million times better and while I’d normally give the edge to album cuts this song in particular seems like a better expression of how I’d describe Meg Myers Music to someone.

She’s a crazy screaming bitch people and this song’s just one huge buildup to her just unleashing this wild banshee sounding cry of anger and frustration that is just exactly what the doctor ordered because while desire is a decidedly sexy tune that is like the craziest most filthy sex you’ll ever have this song is just a lot more its’ a heavy little number that just drills a point through and makes us all want a little crazy in our lives.

So yeah I love me some Meg Myers people and can only hope that she continues to produce this great a music and gives me yet another chance to drool over her beauty and get to see her lovely self scream this shit in person all over again…

6. Man Man-Head on(Hold On to your Heart)

So I found myself woken up in the middle of the night to actually have this be the 20^th song added onto my list because of the number 9 song coming on the radio which is odd to say the least but upon typing this list up I was reminded I kind of said it all in a post I made on here so I think I’m just going to copy and paste that whole article because looking back it’s still kind of true and very rarely has a song literally brought a ray of sunshine in my life….

“So I'm just going to be blunt with you people life in all intensive purposes for me has been shitty as FUUUUUUUUUCK! and it's this increased amount as my ever so in the dog house buddy quoted, "a series of small term issues," that have brought about what's been a very large amount of stress that's had me acting in some rather questionable way's and really just kind of been piling up to really make me just kind of want to scream, but again like I said I was driving home and out of nowhere on that stretch of road that is my way home this song came on the radio and for whatever reason as I turned it up louder then necessary and started singing along the clouds in the sky started to most literally part way and I was greeted by both this oddly amazing feeling of elation and a very nice looking bit of greenery on what's actually a fairly cold and miserable day.

Yes this wonderfully little throwback of a tune that kind of reminds me of Pearl Jams cover of last kiss in that it's an alternative rock song that kind of sounds like an older kind of R&B influenced 60's pop song with a very Doo-whop meet's Baroque Pop sound that's a very sing along vocally impressive rock and roll tune with a lot of emotion poured into a very sad storybook of a tune that's very much pouring a very specific emotion in this tunes case the desire to hold on to that loving spirit we all have with plenty of wonderful word choices like, "Hold it High above flood waters," in between lines about how the singer in question doesn't seem to recognize what he's become and how he needs to keep hope alive in knowing that his heart knows where he's going.

It's an oddly romantic tune that really just kind of hit me like a ton of bricks today and while I may be ever so slightly worn out, tired, and filled with a strong desire to just bitch out everyone around me for being an idiot and for life to quit raining all over my parade I'm kind of having some bit of brightness and clarity by listening to this wonderful little throwback of a tune and i guess in the oddest way possible it might just be the greatest song EVER!”

Honestly couldn’t of said it better myself and to think this is only the 6^th best thing I’ve heard this year which is saying a whole lot about how important the next 5 songs really were…

7. Phantogram-Fall In Love

So this songs a bit difficult to really figure just what it is that has drawn me so much to it I’m not sure if it’s the fact that the woman singing it is really fucking hot, the kind of new-wave beat, the kind of sensual but driving singing of said really attractive lead singer, the simple lyrics, or the fact that it manages to just kind of have this pulsating driving way to it that just kind of leaves you having to dance.

Actually it’s a combination of all those features and the fact that it just hasn’t gotten old this song is just really fucking good indie-electro-new wave-goodness that just demands you listen to it god damnit!

8. Ex Cops-Black Soap

So I’m not going to lie this song kind of came out of nowhere really and I’m kind of glad that it has because it’s the coolest fucking tune people. It’s a lot like a Sonic Youth tune with a very driving guitar rift and a strong female lead before kind of erupting into a very VERY 90’s early alternative chorus that just kind of takes hold and completely sells you on the song right then and there on the spot before kind of introducing a shorter male part to keep things from getting too dreamy.

Overall the exact idea of a good indie rock tune but without all the pretentiousness that plagues the rest of the genre and something that’s all over good…

9. SomeKindaWonderful-Reverse

I honestly can’t really come up with any immediate occurrences of infidelity sounding OH SO FUCKING GOOD people but SomeKindaWonderful have managed to do just that with this decidedly sexy number that’s as wonderfully a shifting a tune as it is dark.

With constant repetition of the phrase, “I would do it again,” when talking about being discovered cheating on his spouse this song’s an odd plea for forgiveness by an individual that has no real intention to ever stop and it’s still as decidedly good now as it was when I first heard it and the kind of stomp-clap along nature of the beat kind of gives it a very driving feel as more and more instruments come in and increase the feeling of this song making it something that you can't help but just feel is something great. 

Still to this day every now and then I find myself going light headed when i hear this song before I just throw myself into its chorus…
