Sam's Top 25 of 2012: #7

Bloody Mary-Silversun Pickups

In a very Pumpkins-esque stylistic shift this rift roaring act of mildly psychadellic hard rockers have come back with a very electro-tinged cut that’s both dreamy and amazing. I’m not sure just what it is about this song that I just love so much but the experience of getting to see it live and really coming to the realization that these guys have modeled their career after the Smashing Pumpkins is something that’s becoming less and less difficult to deny.

Here we have these wonderfully high tinged vocals truly reaching those tripped out heights of perfection over a beat that’s steady but light as a feather. The most wonderfully groan along tune of the year.

Easy Way Out-Gotye

The biggest left field act to crack top 40 this year makes his first appearance on this list with a very action packed fast paced tune that’s a rush of nervousness and awesome.

This song just thrills you from beginning to end and it’s whispered verses only serve as a nice build up to a chorus that’s sure to leave you clinging to the walls in some immense sense of fear and excitement, one of the most playfully experimental cuts Gotye has attempted to put out to the world and just one of many quality cuts from an album who’s reviews have garnered me the most reads of any article on this entire blog.

One of many great new acts I’ve discovered this year.

Everybody Talks-Neon Trees

Yeah buddy it’s official this fun little group of power pop driven new wave Mormons have officially gotten off the list of the best one hit wonders and released what’s arguably the best album of the year with a tune that initially didn’t excite me much but over time it’s blast of energy driven love strung shenanigans managed to keep my attention and change my thoughts.

I really am liking the fact that this year was really good for a lot of bands that I really do like and what really makes this song shine other then it’s easy sing-along style and it’s wonderfully childlike innocence hidden double meanings is the fact that it’s but a small taste of what was the most surprisingly bad ass album of the year.

We Are Young-Fun.

Yeah you are and you’ve also made the teenage anthem of the year with one of the more pleasantly surprising hits this year in one Fun’s, “We Are Young.”

There’s a lot that’s been said about this tune and while it’s been out for quite a while you really couldn’t escape its immense feeling of larger than life feelings of one drunken night on the town no matter what format of radio you were listening to and it really was the catapult for this band becoming something worth knowing and while I did prefer Some Nights more I couldn’t really help but rank this one higher for being the tune that started it all and I’m sure is going to be their set closer for years to come or until they feel like pretending their Radiohead.

Not Your Fault-AWOLNATION

As we reach the top ten of this list the songs only get more awesome and as much as I fell in love with this screaming rage fit of a tune I just couldn’t quite put it above the one’s to come but don’t let that make you think that I don’t absolutely adore this crazy bit of rage induced awesome.

What we have here is the song that made me realize that as shitty a tune as I find Sail to be I shouldn’t ever judge a band by one bad single because unlike that electronic mess of screams this song is pure unadulterated rage in the form of a very guitar smashing synthesizer headache enducing tune that’s both a great tune to have a terrible relationship fall apart to and also make out with a fine someone too.

For being my unapologetic lust enduced tune of the year I’m glad that I was able to overlook that one bad single to actually give this band a shot.

Anna Sun-Walk the Moon

Not going to lie if there was ever a song that so made me want to make a mash-up it’d be this oddly sensual little bit of danceable awesomeness, and as we inch closer to the best of the year I can’t help but find the tunes to get harder to order.

I’m pretty sure the fact that I feel the desire to replace the opening portion o this tune with Ignition by R. Kelly is one of the most oddly alluring things about this song to me but even with that set aside it’s very 80’s tinged synthesizer heavy beat along with a howling series of vocals still leads it to be this very dreamy little number that actually has managed a pretty respectable level of success.

It’s really nice to note just how many of these tunes have actually gotten some well deserved attention and it only gets better from here.

Blood for Poppies-Garbage

Yeah they’re back and as much as I loved me some automatic systematic habit this song by far managed to be so much better, and I think it’s more to do with it’s sense of familiarity in a large kind of anthemic chorus along with a very rough and fuzzy rift that’s dirty in all the right way’s.

Probably the best comeback single of the year and an awesome tune to of gotten to see live too bad the crowd had to be a bunch of pricks.
