Sam's Top 25 of 2012: #12

Anna Sun-Walk the Moon

Not going to lie if there was ever a song that so made me want to make a mash-up it’d be this oddly sensual little bit of danceable awesomeness, and as we inch closer to the best of the year I can’t help but find the tunes to get harder to order.

I’m pretty sure the fact that I feel the desire to replace the opening portion o this tune with Ignition by R. Kelly is one of the most oddly alluring things about this song to me but even with that set aside it’s very 80’s tinged synthesizer heavy beat along with a howling series of vocals still leads it to be this very dreamy little number that actually has managed a pretty respectable level of success.

It’s really nice to note just how many of these tunes have actually gotten some well deserved attention and it only gets better from here.

Blood for Poppies-Garbage

Yeah they’re back and as much as I loved me some automatic systematic habit this song by far managed to be so much better, and I think it’s more to do with it’s sense of familiarity in a large kind of anthemic chorus along with a very rough and fuzzy rift that’s dirty in all the right way’s.

Probably the best comeback single of the year and an awesome tune to of gotten to see live too bad the crowd had to be a bunch of pricks.

Sam's Top 25 of 2012: #14

Tongue Tied-Grouplove

Of all the tunes that were a surprising break out this year I figured this screaming bit of sporadic ever so hyper caffeinated awesome wouldn’t really have that much mainstream appeal but with a glee cover to its credit and a solid foundation of having this so annoying it’s great quality here we had the tune to best express everyone’s meltdown’s and crushes.

Yeah I love those tunes that leave you scratching your head after you listen to them and that’s exactly what this tune did as I slowly but surely found myself jumping around and singing it’s chorus more and more as this year put me through my ups and downs and I think it’s those wonderful bits of rage that made it so great for me.

Tokyo-The Wombats

Probably the most British cut this year to make my personal list and a wonderful little throwback to a time when a larger than life chorus and some interesting wordplay where all you needed to make an awesome tune.

This song is just the simplest pleasures I had this year with a kind of trippy electro heavy sound that’s filled with enough girth to keep things from becoming a headache it’s too bad this is the only tune I heard from them that managed to step out enough for me to remember them for but still an amazing cut none-the-less.

The Celestials-the Smashing Pumpkins

HOLY DAMN Billy Corgan and company came out with a new album! Yeah while I will admit I was a terrible fan and didn’t completely absorb myself in this really great album I was honestly expanding my musical interest and just didn’t give it the proper time of day which is why it sadly ranks so low on this list.

Really what this tune is from my observations is Billy Corgans fully fledged plunge into making as honestly classic rock tinged story driven lyrically focused musically sound tunes that he can possibly craft and it shows because even if I’m not completely devoted this song is still this wonderfully fresh new rocker that’s not trying to be Siamese Dreams 2.0 but rather a new breed of Pumpkin where the sounds may be a throwback but they’re still as fresh as ever.

Keep on keeping on oh great Pumpkin…

Settle Down-Kimbra

The first single from my favorite new discovery of the year a fun little kind of Bjork esque tale of the desires of one gorgeously talented females desire to settle down with her one and only. It’s a very interesting tune that kind of makes one have to give it a second listen because while I can personally come up with an immediate comparison it’s a tune that alternative radio lacked for the past few years and ended up being the most refreshingly natural thing to come along in a while.

Admittedly this isn’t what introduced me to the beauty of one Kimbra it is the tune that showed me that there was more to be aware of and oh was I glad that I gave it all a shot.
